How do I send follow-ups only to people who didn’t reply?

Updated October 29, 2026

Short answer

You need to know who replied, then remove them before the follow-up. By hand, search Gmail for replies, mark those rows in your sheet, and send a new merge to the rest. Automatically, a tool with reply detection does it for you: Mergeline checks Gmail for replies every 10 minutes and stops follow-ups for anyone who answered, bounced or asked to unsubscribe.

The manual way

  1. Add a “Replied” column to your sheet.
  2. In Gmail, search for messages from the people on your list since the day you sent.
  3. Mark each person who answered.
  4. Filter the sheet to the blank rows and send your follow-up to them.

This works for 20 people. At 200 it eats an afternoon, and the follow-up starts a new thread instead of replying in the old one. YAMM offers a version of this on all its plans: a follow-up campaign sent to a filtered group of recipients.

The automatic way

Mergeline keeps track of each person in the campaign. Every 10 minutes while your browser is open, it searches your Gmail for new replies from people on the list, plus bounce messages. A person who replies is marked “Replied” and their remaining follow-ups are cancelled. If they write “unsubscribe”, they go on your do-not-email list too.

Reply detection is not perfect

Write the follow-up for silence

People who did not answer were busy, not offended. Keep the follow-up short, assume they missed it, and add one new reason to reply. Because Mergeline sends the follow-up in the same thread, your first email sits right below it, so you do not need to repeat it.
