Is there a free tool for automatic follow-ups in Gmail that stops on reply?

Updated October 29, 2026

Short answer

Rarely. Most tools keep automatic follow-ups that stop on reply on paid plans: Mailmeteor from Premium, GMass from Premium, and Mergeline from Pro at $12 a month. YAMM lets every plan send a follow-up campaign to a filtered group, but you start it yourself. The free route is manual: check who replied, then merge again to the rest.

What each tool includes

ToolAutomatic follow-ups
Gmail built-in mail mergeNone
YAMMFollow-up campaigns to filtered recipients on all plans, started by you
MailmeteorPremium (5 follow-ups) and Professional (10)
GMassPremium and up; no free plan
MergelinePro, up to 7, stop on reply

Why it is usually paid

Stop-on-reply follow-ups mean checking every thread for new replies and sending days later. People clearly want it: one Gmail user wrote that “all the auto follow-up tools for Gmail suck” and built their own. Another Reddit thread asks for the best free tool for this and gets mostly paid answers.

The free manual method

  1. Keep a Replied column in your sheet.
  2. A few days after sending, search Gmail for answers and mark them.
  3. Filter to the people who did not reply and send a short follow-up merge.

This works with Mergeline’s free plan too. See follow up only with people who didn’t reply.

Is paying worth it?

Do the math on your time. If you send to 100 people a week and follow up twice, the manual method means checking and re-sending about 200 emails a week by hand. Mergeline Pro does it for $12 a month, or $99 a year, cancel any time. If you send a campaign once a quarter, the free manual route is fine.

Keep follow-ups short

Whichever tool you use, a follow-up should be two or three lines. Its job is to bring your first email back to the top of the inbox, not to repeat it.
