What are Google’s bulk sender requirements?
Updated October 29, 2026
Every sender to Gmail needs SPF or DKIM on their domain and a spam complaint rate under 0.3%, with Google suggesting a target below 0.1%. Senders of 5,000 or more emails a day to Gmail accounts must also set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC together and offer one-click unsubscribe. Most people mail merging from their own account fall in the first group.
The two tiers
| Requirement | All senders | 5,000+ a day to Gmail |
|---|---|---|
| SPF or DKIM | Yes | Both SPF and DKIM |
| DMARC | Not required by this rule | Required |
| Spam rate | Under 0.3%, aim for under 0.1% | Under 0.3%, aim for under 0.1% |
| One-click unsubscribe | Not required by this rule | Required |

What this means for you
- On a free @gmail.com account you do not control the gmail.com domain, so your part is keeping complaints low.
- On Workspace with your own domain, your admin sets up SPF, DKIM and ideally DMARC in your DNS. Ask before your first campaign.
- The spam rate is per sender, so a single careless campaign can hurt your everyday email too.
Keeping complaints low
Complaints come from people who did not expect your email. Send to a list that knows you, say who you are in the first line, and make it easy to opt out. Mergeline’s do-not-email list makes sure anyone who replies “unsubscribe” is never emailed again. See how unsubscribe links work.
How to check your setup
Ask your domain admin or DNS host whether SPF, DKIM and DMARC records exist for your domain. Then send yourself an email at a Gmail address, open it, and use “Show original”. Gmail shows whether SPF, DKIM and DMARC passed. If any say “fail”, fix that before you send a campaign, because it affects every email you send from that domain.
Counting toward 5,000
The 5,000 figure is per day, to Gmail accounts. Most people running a mail merge from one Gmail or Workspace account never get close, since Gmail itself caps them at 500 or 2,000.
