Can I use Gmail to send bulk emails?
Updated October 29, 2026
Yes, within limits. Gmail is fine for hundreds of personal emails a day: outreach, invitations, updates to clients or parents. It is not built for newsletters to tens of thousands. Free accounts stop at about 500 a day and Workspace at 2,000. Above 5,000 a day to Gmail users, Google also requires SPF, DKIM, DMARC and one-click unsubscribe.
Good fits for Gmail
- Personal outreach where you want replies.
- Event invitations and reminders to a known group.
- Updates to clients, parents, donors or volunteers.
- Job applications and recruiting messages.
Better fits for a newsletter tool
- Designed newsletters with images and many links.
- Lists in the tens of thousands.
- Mail that people subscribed to on a sign-up form.
A Reddit user asking for a mass mailing tool “directly” from Workspace got this same split in the answers: Gmail for personal volume, a dedicated service for marketing volume.
If you use Gmail
Use a mail merge tool so each person gets their own email, not a Bcc blast. Pace the sends, keep spam complaints under Google’s 0.3% line, and stop emailing anyone who asks. Mergeline does the pacing and the do-not-email list for you, free for 60 a day. See mail merge vs Mailchimp for the other side.
A rule of thumb
Ask yourself: would I be happy if each person replied to me directly? If yes, Gmail mail merge fits. If the email is a broadcast that nobody is meant to answer, like a monthly newsletter with a dozen links, a newsletter service is the better home. It also keeps your everyday Gmail account away from the risk that comes with large marketing sends. Some teams run both side by side for exactly this reason.
Size up your list
Count how many people you would email in a normal week. Under a few hundred, Gmail mail merge handles it with room to spare. In the thousands every week, plan for a newsletter service from the start.
