Can I create personalized Gmail drafts to review before sending?
Updated October 29, 2026
Yes. Instead of sending, some mail merge tools write one personalized draft per person into your Gmail Drafts folder. You open each draft, read it, change a line or add a file, and press send yourself. Mergeline Pro calls this drafts mode. It suits small, careful lists: parents, job applications, or clients where every word matters.
Who asks for this
A teacher on Reddit put it simply: “I would like to review those email before sending if possible.” The same goes for anyone emailing about grades, money or a job. A quick human check catches the one row with a wrong name or an outdated note.
Drafts mode in Mergeline
- Build the campaign as usual: list, email, tags.
- In the send step, choose “Create drafts” instead of “Send”.
- Mergeline creates one draft per person in your Gmail, with the tags filled in, plus any Cc, Bcc and attachments.
- Open Gmail’s Drafts folder, check each email, edit if needed and press send.
Drafts mode is part of Pro. Digital Inspiration’s add-on offers a drafts option too, so check whichever tool you use.
Drafts vs sending
| Drafts | Send | |
|---|---|---|
| Time per email | A few seconds each | None |
| Last-minute edits | Yes, per person | No |
| Follow-ups | You send them yourself | Automatic with Pro |
| Best for | Under about 50 careful emails | Larger lists |
A good habit either way: preview five random people before sending, including one with empty cells.
Make reviewing fast
- Sort the list so the people who need extra care come first.
- Read only the parts that change: greeting, personal line, file.
- Delete any draft you decide not to send. It does no harm sitting there, but it is easy to send by mistake later.
- Send the drafts in small groups through the day rather than all at once.
Gmail’s daily limit applies to drafts you send by hand just the same as to sends from a tool.
