What happens when you reach Gmail’s sending limit?
Updated October 29, 2026
Gmail shows the error “You have reached a limit for sending mail” and stops you sending new email for a while. Google says the block lifts within 1 to 24 hours. You can still read and receive mail. Hitting the limit over and over, or sending lots of mail that bounces or gets reported, can lead to a longer suspension.
What you will see
- An error in Gmail when you try to send.
- Bounce messages for emails your tool tried to send after the limit.
- Normal incoming mail. Receiving is not affected.
What to do right now
- Stop the campaign so the tool does not keep trying.
- Wait. The limit resets within 1 to 24 hours.
- Check what pushed you over: a big Cc list, a second tool, or a runaway script.
- Restart with a lower daily cap so you keep room for normal email.
How Mergeline handles it
Mergeline counts what it sends each day and stops at the cap you set, before Gmail does. If Gmail still refuses an email, Mergeline backs off, respects Gmail’s retry hints, and tells you with a notification. Your queue waits and carries on later. It also pauses on its own if too many addresses bounce, which protects your account from a bad list.
To see the numbers behind the limit, read how many emails you can send per day.
How to avoid it next time
- Set your tool’s daily cap well below the limit, leaving room for normal email.
- Count Cc and Bcc addresses, since they use up the limit too.
- Use only one sending tool per account, so two tools do not add up without you noticing.
- Spread long lists over several days instead of pushing them through in one go.
If you hit the limit often even with these habits, you are sending more than Gmail is built for and a newsletter service may suit you better.
