Why is mail merge not showing in Gmail?
Updated October 29, 2026
Almost always because your account is not on an eligible plan. Gmail’s built-in mail merge comes only with Workspace Individual, Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and Education Standard and Plus. Free Gmail and Business Starter do not have it. If you are on an eligible plan, ask your admin, then reload Gmail. Otherwise, an extension adds mail merge to any account.
Check these in order
- Your plan. Open your Google Account or ask your admin which Workspace plan you are on. Business Starter is the most common surprise.
- Your account. Make sure you are in the Workspace account, not a personal @gmail.com tab.
- Your admin settings. In a company or school, an administrator may control the feature.
- Gmail itself. Reload Gmail and try a new compose window. New features can take time to reach every account.
You are not alone
A Reddit thread titled “mail merge button missing” has the exact complaint: “the mail merge button does not show up like they say”. Another user bought Business Starter for this feature and found it was not included.
A way around it
If your plan does not include it, you do not need to upgrade Workspace. Mergeline adds mail merge to any Gmail or Workspace account, including a Mergeline button next to Gmail’s Send. Add people in To, press it, and each person gets their own copy. It is free for 60 emails a day, and unlike the built-in tool it allows tags in the subject and follow-ups (Pro).
Still missing on an eligible plan?
Try Gmail in a private window with no extensions, in case another add-on hides the button. Check that you opened a full compose window, not a quick reply. If it still does not appear, your admin can confirm with Google support that the feature is on for your account.
Personal and work accounts side by side
If you are signed in to more than one Google account, Gmail may open the personal one by default. Check the avatar in the top right before you look for the button.
