Can I mail merge with a personal (free) Gmail account?

Updated October 29, 2026

Short answer

Not with Google’s built-in mail merge, which only comes with certain paid Google Workspace plans. You can still mail merge from a free @gmail.com account with an add-on or extension. Mergeline works on free accounts and sends up to 60 emails a day on its free plan. Gmail’s own cap of about 500 emails a day still applies.

Who gets Google’s mail merge

Google lists the eligible plans: Workspace Individual, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and Education Standard and Plus. Free Gmail accounts are not on the list, and neither is Business Starter. One Reddit user bought Business Starter for this feature alone and wrote: “What a joke that is! It’s actually all I really wanted GWS for.”

Options on a free account

ToolFree emails a dayNotes
Mergeline60Extension; list stays in your browser
YAMM20Sheets add-on
Mailmeteor50Sheets add-on and extension

Paid plans raise the tool’s own cap, but a free Gmail account can never send more than Gmail allows.

Limits that still apply

If you need more than that each day, look at Workspace limits or a newsletter service.

Is it worth paying for Workspace for this?

Workspace brings a custom domain and higher limits, which help if you send for a business. But if mail merge is the only reason, check the plan first, because Business Starter does not include Google’s mail merge. An extension on your current account may be all you need, at a lower cost.
