How do I send bulk email from Gmail for free?
Updated October 29, 2026
Use a free mail merge tool and stay under Gmail’s limit. A standard Gmail account can send to about 500 people a day, and Mergeline’s free plan sends up to 60 personal emails a day from your account. Space the emails out, send only to people who expect to hear from you, and spread bigger lists over several days.
Know the ceiling first
Google says a standard Gmail account hits “You have reached a limit for sending mail” if you send to more than 500 recipients in one email or more than 500 emails in a day. The block lifts within 1 to 24 hours. Google Workspace accounts get 2,000 a day, with 1,500 of those for mail merge.
So “bulk” from Gmail means hundreds a day, not tens of thousands. If you need more, a newsletter service is a better fit.
A free setup that works
- Clean the list: remove duplicates, typos and old addresses. Mergeline does this when you import and can check that each domain exists.
- Write a short, plain email and personalize the greeting with {{FirstName|there}}.
- Turn on slow start if your account is new or quiet. Mergeline starts at 20 a day and adds 15 each sending day.
- Send. The free plan covers 60 a day, so a list of 180 people takes three days.
What to avoid
- Bought or scraped lists. They bounce and draw spam reports, which can get an account suspended.
- Sending hundreds of emails in a few minutes. Random gaps look more like a person.
- Heavy images and many links in the first email.

A simple daily routine
Send the day’s batch in the morning, answer replies as they come in, and look at bounces before the next batch. If more than a few emails bounce, stop and clean the list before you carry on. Mergeline pauses by itself when too many addresses bounce, and adds those addresses to your do-not-email list so they are never tried again.
